LEGO has released many differnet electronics systems and parts over the years. This page will help explain which parts are compatible with each other so you can get your parts working.
There are a significant number of stand alone electronic bricks that do not connect to other electronic LEGO elements. The most obvious example is the light brick 54869/62930 which contains 2 button batteries, an LED and a button to activate the light. This brick, while electronic can't connect or interact with other electronic bricks.
There are other larger light and sound bricks, and even bricks with self contained motors such as the pre-programmed micro scout. These are all found in the electronics category, but are not tagged for one of the below systems as they have no compatibility with other electronic parts.
Remote Control
There are a number of LEGO motorised bricks that can be controlled with a remote controller. These controllers are often not compatible with each other. Some examples of this is the Bionicle Manus sets, and Spybotics sets where the receiving brick has in built motors. Some other receiver bricks such as 6272c01 contain a connection point where any motor from a specific system can be connected.
LEGO has used different types of remote control over the years:
IR (infrared) - requires line of sight
Radio (RC) - requires an antenna (note some parts with RC in the part name are referring to Remote Control not Radio Control)
Bluetooth - can require an app on a smartphone
Receiver bricks and compatible remote controls are identified in the database with a pairing relationship that can be seen on the part page. If they form part of a larger electronics system they will also be tagged with the relevant system as per below categories.
A lot of the earlier electronics parts used a two pin wiring system. Initially the cables had split ends with each pin needing to be connected individually, but later moved to a combined 2 or 3 pin plug, the third middle pin was non conductive and the purpose of this was to provide stability to the connection. This does introduce some compatibility issues with older 2 pin sockets not having a third hole for the middle stabalising pin. The newer three pin version also had holes in it to allow the daisy chaining of connections.
In some versions of the cables, wires can be removed from connectors with a screwdriver, making custom length cables easy to make. Because the same connection type was used for systems with different voltages, care should be taken to only connect compatible equipment.
4.5V Train
This train system has no electronics in the track. The train car is powered by a special battery box/train car that holds 3x C cell batteries. Some battery cars have a switch on the side that can interact with other objects fixed near the track, such as causing the train to stop when it reaches a certain point..
4.5V Motors
These were typically powered by a long battery box that also contained 3x C cell batteries. The switch on the end of the battery box is removeable and can be pushed in either direction. It is possible to run 4.5V motors from the train car battery boxes, and to also run 4.5V trains from the below battery boxes, although this might not be practical.
This range also includes LEGOs first programable product. Getting the required controller, interface board, and compatible computer (such as an Apple II) is quite challenging in this day and age. If you are interested, this blog post goes into detail about how you can get it working. Without this setup, the 4.5V sensors won't be particularly useful as they are not compatible with later electronics systems.
Grey switches used for the 12V train system are compatable with the 4.5V motors as seen in the above set 1039.

12V Train
The pin connector 12V system was used exclusively for train layouts. This train system uses metal contacts that run along the centre of the track. Motorised train bricks have metal pins on springs to recieve power from the track. This system allowed for trains that were mains powered, and that could be controlled remotely from a wired control box. Two eras of 12V trains exist, the blue era was released in 1969, and later the grey era which was released in 1980. Track pieces and controllers are compatible between the two eras, both using 12V DC, however there are some differences in the points controllers and sleepers for the track.
This system uses at least 3 different plug types.
standard 2 pin connections as per the above 4.5V system to connect lights to motorised train bricks, and grey era remote control switch motors. Split pin cables are needed for some train bricks.
Wide 2 pin connectors to connect to transformer bricks.
3 pin connectors (V shape, all conductive) to connect blue era points to switches. (if you have a photo of this please submit!!)
Points for this railway system come in both manual, and automatic versions for both the grey and blue eras. Manual points must be changed by twisting the sign on top, where automatic points can be wired and controlled from afar. The blue era automatic points have the motor built into the points assembly, whereas the grey era points have a removeable remote control switch motor. This switch motor can be used for other things such as a train decoupler, or operating boom gates at a level crossing. There is also a special red/green light brick that can be controlled with a switch panel in a similar way to the switch motors. Grey era switches can be clicked together into one big row of controls and connect onto the side of the grey era transformer box. These use 12V DC, the same as the track. Blue era points use 16V AC, and the switches also have a different electrical design requiring a three pronged cable between the switch and points. You cannot connect grey switches to a blue transformer. You can connect blue points to a grey transformer box by using the 12V AC output. This comes with a plastic cover on it as it is not needed for grey era layouts, and accidentally connecting DC equipment to an AC output could cause damage.

Part upn0127, not clear exactly what outputs this one has, if you own this part please provide some photos!
Part 740 (220V) / upn0147 (110V) which has 0-12V DC output for track controlled by nob, 16V AC output for blue points, and a third 3.6V AC output which might be for lights.
Part 7864 which has a 0-12V DC variable output for track controlled by nob, a covered 12V AC output for backwards compatibility with old blue points, and a fixed 12V DC output on the side to connect grey era control switches.
There are also compatible 12V light bricks, which can be used to add lighting to trains, or train stations that would be compatible with the 12V power supply being used for the layout. The 9V brick connectors are one of the more long standing LEGO connection types lasting 27 years (a bit less than the 36 years for the pin connectors). These used metal contacts embedded within a 2x2x2/3 plate to connect motors, lights, and later sensors, to battery boxes or other control bricks. Despite the 4 studs being used, this is still a 2 wire system, with pairs of studs being electrically connected inside the brick. The metal contacts are arranged in a way that cables can be stacked in any orientaion without causing a short circuit, however some orientations will cause the motor direction to be reversed.
The cables came with 2 types of insulations; plastic and rubber. The rubber insulated cables have started to crumble and fray exposing conductors contained inside. Luckily they are limited to a few sets. If your cables are showing signs of ware, this blog post shows one method of repairing them.
If you have motors or lights with this connection type there are lots of options for powering them.
Basic battery boxes, good for testing or when you just want simple on/off functionality. Some battery boxes can also do forward/reverse. Battery boxes either contained 1x 9V battery, or 6x AA batteries.
Control panels were released for train systems but can also be used for other motors when you want mains power, or control over the motor speed.
Remote control bricks were released for RC cars which have an in built servo for steering as well as a connection point for other motor(s).
Progamable bricks for more sophisticated controls and programs. These also have input for sensors. RCX bricks can also be remote controlled if you have the remote and correct firmware installed.
Once you have a power source sorted, there are lots of things that can be connected.

Sensors use the same connector type, but serve no purpose unless they are connected to a sensor port of a control brick. Care should be taken to not connect sensors to motor ports.
9V track has the conductors in the rails, rather than along the centre like the 12V track. Pickups for the train motors are in the wheels. This means track and motors are not compatible between the two powered track train systems. Part 5305 is needed to connect the track to a power source/controller. Only manual points are available for the 9V train system. The controller brick only has 1 output for the track with no way of powering other auxilary equipment.
All compatible bricks and cables that form part of this 9V brick connect system are tagged with 9V BRICK CONNECT. There is an additional tag for 9V railway that includes track components, and parts able to power/be powered by the track.
Eventually LEGO decided to move on from the limited functionality of a two wire system and introduced a cable type with more cores. This allowed them to release motors that had self contained rotation sensors as sensor data and motor control signals could now be carried in a single cable. Instead of developing a new plug type, they went with a modified modular jack connector which has 6 cores and is very similar to the RJ12 connector often used for telecommunications, except for RJ12 the tab is centred and for MMJ it is to the side. This makes sourcing replacement cables significantly easier as you do not need to stick with LEGO branded ones.
The same cable type was used for NXT and EV3 so motors from one set can be plugged into a control brick from the other. There is also some compatibility with the way the bricks can be programmed as explained here on the LEGO Education website. Both NXT and EV3 are programmed using a USB cable.
There are less options of controlling motors for this system as it was used exclusively for Mindstorms. Custom programs can be run from both types of control brick and there is also an IR remote control included in the EV3 set.

Motors and sensors from NXT sets are identified with orange accents, while EV3 parts use red. The range of compatable sensors is the most extensive of any LEGO electronics system.
There also exists an official conversion cable that allows you to connect older motors and sensors to an NXT. Part 54690 bridges the two systems. msk6003 has confirmed that RCX sensors cannot be used on EV3, and was having motor control issues. I am yet to confirm exact compatibility of RCX/NXT and will update the below table when complete.

Both NXT and EV3 have 4 sensor inputs. NXT has 3 motor outputs and EV3 has 4.

Power Functions (or PF) is the followup of the Brick Connectors, using the same 9V. The main difference is found in the connections; where the old system used standard studs, the Power Functions has a special connection. The connectors can be stacked, but only in a single orientation, making it impossible to change the polarity, and with that the direction the motor turns, without the use of a special Pole Reverser, or flipping the power switch on the battery box. Another difference is that all motors have the cable permanently attached to them. The cable also contains 4 wires, allowing for more information to be passed along.
Power Functions is compatible with 9V Brick Connectors. The extension cables 58118 and 60656 comes with 2 different connectors. One is the standard Power Functions (DBG), which matches up with other Power Function connectors on the top and bottom. The LBG connector has a Power Functions connector on the top, but the underside can connect to a 9V Brick Connectors connector.
The system includes:
Battery boxes, including a rechargeable version with a stepless power control
IR controllers. One version can only turn on and off, the other can also control speed and is usually used in train sets. Each controller can run 2 motors, and be set to 4 different channels, allowing for 8 motors to be controlled simultaneously.
Motors in different types and sizes, including a servo motor with return-to-center
Lego Dimensions is a console video game where you can use physical bricks to scan in characters to the game. It requires three things to work; a gaming console with the game installed, a compatible game pad to scan in the characters/items, and the discs to scan in.
The base game was available for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and WiiU. These starter packs came with the game, game pad and a parts pack to build a portal and a few starter characters. Multiple expansion packs were available offering a wide range of characters and vehicles that could be scanned into the game.
Powered Up is the follow-up for Power Functions, and was introduced in 2017 in WeDo and 2017 with BOOST. The main difference with all previous versions is that the system can be fully programmed and controlled using a BlueTooth connection to a smartphone or other device. The system is pretty extensive, being used in BOOST, trains, Technic sets, Mindstorms Robot Inventor, SPIKE, and by the time I finished writing this section probably more. All systems have their own battery box, which also functions as the BlueTooth hub, and often also have their own motors and other assecoires. There is cross-compability, but there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to what fits with what. Systems like BOOST and Robot Inventor come with their own specialized app and programming system, however Technic sets get a special app designed specifically for the models. The LEGO Powered Up is used for a dual purpose: It has specific programs to control trains and other sets using the system, but it also allows you to create your own programs, with the possibility to use most of the diverse components. The components are connected by a unique plug with 6 wires.
The system has been received with mixed reactions. The major (initial) downside is the need of a smart device to control the motors, while previous systems were just the push on a button on the battery box, making play a lot more complicated. This is partly resolved by the introduction of 22167 and 85825 Non-Bluetooth hubs, which have physical buttons. It is also possible to control the standard 28738 hub with a remote control. It works on Bluetooth, but does not require the usage of a smart device. Another issue is the quality of the LEGO Powered Up app. It works, but doesn't come with any documentation, meaning you have to figure out the function of all programming bricks yourself. RacingBrick has a great overview, but an unexpected update in June 2023 replaced all icons for new ones, making the list harder to use. Another downside is the apps themselves. History has thought us that software quickly becomes obsolete, and LEGO is no exception. The LEGO BOOST Droid Commander app is already discontinued, making set 75253-1 Droid Commander unplayable. But once you figure out the icons, the possibilty of making your own programmable models is intriquing. Now if only LEGO would make extension cables...
All this has sparked third-party apps to pop up, like BrickController 2, which lets you control the system with a game controller. All these apps use the firmware on the hubs, and still need a smart device to function. The best option for a stand-alone system atm is PyBricks. With this system, you can download your own Python-based script onto a hub, and make it run all by itself, bypassing the firmware. This also allows for faster and more precise control of the motros and various sensors. You can even let multiple hubs communicate with each other without a mobile device as in-between.
