In my review for the custom Triceratops set from Naturalis, I’ve mentioned that I am a dino fan, with the Triceratops being my favorite. So when I saw the Triceratops skull in the Jurassic world series it made my dino heart glow. I'll take you through the build of the skull, and I'm curious to see if there are any more dino fans here! This set is the second in the Dinosaur Fossils series. Last year's 76964-1 Dinosaur Fossils: T. rex Skull is not in my collection (yet), but now I do have this herbivore from the same era to join 21320-1 Dinosaur Fossils on my dino display.
The Set
Young paleontologists aged 9 and up can enjoy imaginative Jurassic World play by collecting dinosaur fossils with this Dinosaur Fossils: Triceratops Skull (76969) LEGO® Jurassic World building kit. The box measures 59 x 262 x 282 mm and weighs 600 grams. Inside we find 5 numbered plastic bags, a sticker sheet with a single sticker and the building instructions. The pdf can be downloaded here. I hoped for some information on the Triceratops, but we do get two pages of some nice images.
The Parts
The set contains 468 parts and 14 spares, in 19 colors, and 28 part categories, with a total of 174 unique parts/color combinations. Main colors are:
1x Kid, Jurassic Park Shirt, Blue Legs, Black Hair
The Build
In the first bag we find the minifig with a nice shirt with the Jurassic Park logo, holding an excavated bone. Then we build the stand for the skull, including an excavation area on display. In the back of the stand, an ambered mosquito is hidden. The sticker shows information for the Triceratops.
In the second bag we start with the skull. First we built of all the inside to make a good base.
In the third bag we add more details to the base.
And we add the lower jaw and the eyes.
Bag 4 builds the upper jaw with the typical nasal horn.
And the big postorbital horns are added.
In the fifth bag we build the famous neck shield. There's a lot going on in the back to make a sturdy section.
Conclusion
What I really like is that you can choose to put the skull on the frame or keep it free. Both options are good but you can do what suits you the most. And the skull itself it's really solid; children (and adults) can examine what the skull looks like from all sides without fear of a piece breaking off. This gives the set both a play value and a display value. What I like about dinosaurs is there is still a lot left to discover and explore, and allowing to examine the skull plays well into the curiosity I have.
The skull looks great, but there are some small issues. The major issue for me is the look of the shallow eyes. On the skeletons I've seen in Naturalis (as shown in the header image), the eyes are much deeper, but are barely visible in the LEGO version.
I think MOC-212696 by AndrewG123 is a nice fix for those issues by making some minor changes without requiring a lot of extra parts.
Does anyone know how easily this could fit in the modular Natural History Museum? Would it make a good display piece in there, or would it be too awkward/ involve too much rejigging of the modular?
These "blind eyes" are the most serious issue I had with this set. Note there are no eyes actually, or any soft (non bone) tissue, as it’s a skull. The skull is indeed shooshable, but you will get wrong conclusions on anatomy. The anatomy is too simplified, but there are indications it was designed based on real specimens (more on my review). Some recolors seem not necessary: 73825 may be in tan, not dark tan, and 5404 slope 2 x 1 may be any color, as these are buried inside of the skull, below postorbital horns (nice catch with this name), and light nougat, already available on another set, works better with tan than medium nougat.
Honestly a big disappointed by this set. I was highly anticipating it's reveal but it just isn't as good as the T-Rex. 1 the frill is to blocky, 2 there are a lot more exposed studs, and 3, the more messy look + exposed medium nougat.

The skull is indeed shooshable, but you will get wrong conclusions on anatomy. The anatomy is too simplified, but there are indications it was designed based on real specimens (more on my review).
Some recolors seem not necessary: 73825 may be in tan, not dark tan, and 5404 slope 2 x 1 may be any color, as these are buried inside of the skull, below postorbital horns (nice catch with this name), and light nougat, already available on another set, works better with tan than medium nougat.
