Clikits is a pain in the neck when you are trying to track down rare LEGO colors, I found two sets that should give me some important parts I'm missing. Let's get breaking those seals.
Unless you're new to LEGO and Rebrickable there's no question you are familiar with Clikits, LEGO's attempt to woo the female demographic. Tobymac did a great article on Clikits for his Is This LEGO? series (you can read that one here), and I often mention it when talking about colors. I don't want to repeat what's already been said so I'll briefly summarize:

But there's no doubt it played a crucial role in LEGOs evolution, especially when talking about colors. They learned that usually less is more. And perhaps more crucially, it doesn't matter if the LEGO logo is on the box, if it sucks people won't buy it.
Recently the DOTS theme tried to revive buildable jewellery and although it has its followers it mostly failed just like Clikits did (or succeeded if you think Clikits was a success), lasting 89 sets over 4 years compared to Clikits 82 sets over 4 years. However, to DOTS credit they haven't completely given up on the concept just the stand-alone theme with the DOTS concept appearing in other themes sets, most recently in 43276-1 - Snow White's Jewelry Box and 43239-1 - Mirabel's Photo Frame and Jewelry Box.

Set 7542-1 - Flashin' Fashion Frame was originally for sale for $20 / £12.99, I paid €23.96 (~$25.85) sealed
Set 7537-1 - Retro Chic Cosmetics Bag was originally for sale for $15 / £9.99, I paid €19.83 (~$21.39) sealed
These were a great find, some Clikits can be reasonable as it has low collectability but some gets very expensive because there's usually only 1 or none to choose from, especially sealed which is important for getting some of these colors that Bricklink don't recognize.
7537-1 - Retro Chic Cosmetics Bag
The box is in great condition considering it's 20 years old. It measures 290mm x 245mm x 80mm (at its widest point). Inside is 4 bags, an instruction manual, but most interesting is the choice to have a window on the box which means 7 parts are packaged behind a cardboard panel you have to rip open. This is just very annoying and I'm glad LEGO stopped doing this. None of the bags were numbered.
The Instructions
The instruction manual, if you can really call it that, measures 210mm x 150mm, has 7 pages and a total of 4 build steps. But they do contain a bunch of design ideas. The lack of build steps is because the concept is more about 'do what you want' rather than follow strict guidelines.
The Parts
Other than the bag the parts are pretty standard Clikits parts. This was themed around the Clikits character Star (there were 3, Star, Daisy, and Heart), she had the darkest of the color schemes, lots of purples and blues. Heart were more Pinks, and Daisy Yellow and Oranges.
The colors
On to the reason I currently own this set. There is one color that is exclusive to this set (how annoying is that!) Glitter Trans-Medium Purple. Only two parts were ever made in that color (or more accurately color effect). Other important colors are Trans-Light Purple and Trans-Medium Purple, both pretty much exclusive to Clikits (Trans-Medium Purple was used in 1 non-Clikits parts, X-Pod part 47674 Pod, Center Barrel Section 10 x 10 x 3 1/3 X-Pod).
In the above picture you can see only 3 official LEGO colors. Wait, do you really see 5? Well I do too and that is why these Clikits parts are a pain. The official colors you see are:
Left and large bag - Trans-Light Purple
Middle group with the light purple star - Trans-Medium Purple
Right (single square accent part) - Glitter Trans-Medium Purple
The bag off-color is probably due to the part being produced by a different manufacturer with different materials. We don't actually have official LEGO color information on this part so they may have considered it a different color back then and we just haven't discovered the information yet, until then it's put under Trans-Light Purple.
The light purple star is a different story. According to LEGO we know they consider this part to be Trans-Medium Purple despite the fact that is looks nothing like other TMP parts. These parts are made from a more flexible, rubbery material which probably affected the hue. Honestly if these were more widely used System parts we'd probably invent a separate color so it's less confusing.
The Build
As stated above there's not really a 'build' and honestly I didn't really care enough do a bunch of tedious decorating (I guess I'm not the target audience). I did a little so can see how it works. Again for detailed images on how the system works I highly recommend Tobymacs Is This LEGO post.
7542-1 - Flashin' Fashion Frame
Another 20 year old box in great condition. It measures 385mm x 215mm x 60mm (at its widest point). Unusually for a LEGO set it has exposed buttons for kids in stores to test out the lights and sounds.
Inside is 2 bags, one contains the instruction manual, legal battery information, the sticker sheet, and the spare large frame inserts. The other contains all the Clikits icon and accent parts. On a separate cardboard tray that you have to rip open is the frame which has a bunch of Icons pre-installed on the frame and some more inserts.
The Instructions
The instruction manual (more of a instruction flyer) measures 210mm x 300mm. As you can see above it acts as inspiration but also gives details on how the frames electronics works.
The Parts
All three girls are included in this set even if Daisy's Yellow and Oranges aren't present. The frame comes with 3 inserts, a cardboard picture of the Clikits girls, a mirror, and a clear plastic sheet to protect any photos you put in. The mirror doubles as the back of the insert to keep photos in place.
The colors
This sets colors of interest are Trans-Light Royal Blue and Trans-Pink, but it also contains Trans-Medium Purple and Trans-Light Purple. Trans-Pink is a really nice shade that I think looks much nicer than Trans-Dark Pink, it's a shame the color never made it out of the Clikits theme. Trans-Light Royal Blue is probably pretty derivative of Trans-Medium Blue which is probably why Bricklink still list this color as Trans-Medium Blue. It's a bit of a duller shade than TMB. This one is less surprising that it was retired.
Again not really any build (even less than set 7537-1), but I did want to show you the light effect. Unfortunately the sound wouldn't work but luckily the 20 year old batteries that had leaked didn't damage any of the part, so a simple swap for some new ones and the lights lit up. I am curious about what the music sounded like though.
Conclusion
So whilst the sets were not my cup of tea, my daughters eyes lit up when she saw these sets and immediately claimed ownership of them. What is dull and tedious for a middle-aged man is clearly interesting to a 7 year old. Luckily I didn't buy the sets for the build or playability I bought them for the colors, and in that regard they didn't disappoint.
Even within the other trans-[something] purple parts in the middle (not including the much lighter star), there are 2 distinct hues to my eyes: the small rectangle looks to match the Glitter Trans-Medium Purple part, and in any case it clearly doesn't match the two small Clikits or the separator, all of which look like they're the same hue to me.
Is that an artifact of the photography, or do they look that way in person, too?
If it weren’t for the logo I would’ve claimed this playset not to be Lego. Very interesting article, always nice to see some stuff outside ones comfort zone. Thank you!
It's odd seeing the "LEGO" logo hiding in the bottom right corner of the boxes, instead of being larger and in the top left like most of their products. It's almost like LEGO was embarrassed by the Clikits products from the beginning, and didn't want anyone to know it was a LEGO product to begin with.
I think the brand distancing was intended to go in both directions. It seems like Lego at the time thought that the brand, as well as the products, didn't appeal to young girls, so they wanted to minimize "Lego" on the Clikits products so that it wouldn't keep people from buying them.
